Dual exceptionality, often referred to as "twice-exceptional" or "2e," is a term used to describe individuals who possess both exceptional intellectual or creative abilities and disabilities or learning differences. These students present a unique set of challenges and opportunities for teachers, students, and parents alike.

To grasp the complexities of dual exceptionality, it's essential to recognize the two exceptionalities at play:

Intellectual or Creative Exceptionality: This aspect typically involves having an above-average IQ, advanced problem-solving skills, exceptional creativity, or talents in areas like mathematics, music, or art.

Learning Disabilities or Differences: These can range from dyslexia and ADHD to autism spectrum disorders. These challenges can affect various aspects of learning, including reading, writing, attention, or social interactions.

Students who are classified dually-exceptional have several challenges,

Among the challenges faced by dually-exceptional students can include:

Identity and Self-Esteem: Dual exceptional students may struggle with their identity. They might feel different from their peers due to their learning challenges while also experiencing imposter syndrome if they are placed in advanced programs. This can affect their self-esteem and confidence.

Academic Frustration: Dual exceptional students may feel frustrated by the disconnect between their high cognitive abilities and their struggles in certain academic areas. This frustration can lead to disengagement and a negative attitude toward learning.

Social Challenges: Some dual exceptional students may have difficulty forming social connections due to their unique abilities or disabilities. They may feel isolated or misunderstood by their peers.

Advocacy: As they grow older, dual exceptional students may need to learn self-advocacy skills to communicate their needs effectively to teachers and peers. This can be a challenging process, but it's crucial for their long-term success.

Dual exceptionality presents a unique set of challenges, however, with the right support, understanding, and advocacy, dual exceptional students can thrive academically, emotionally, and socially, ultimately realizing their full potential. Recognizing and embracing the duality of their exceptionalities is the first step towards providing them with the education and support they deserve.

Our program for dually exceptional students is a multi-age, interdisciplinary (English, Science, and Social Studies) program, where students pursue their personal passions in a broad based learning environment. Our students have a wide variety of interests, from French Rocco interior design, to ancient history and poultry husbandry.
